Then, disaster struck.
Leading 55-42 with 16:17 to go in the game, the Pumas went on a tear. The home team out-scored the Rangers 18-3 in the next 4 minutes and 50 seconds in taking a 60-58 lead. It was a lead Saint Joseph's would never relinquish.
Saint Joseph's extended its lead to as many as 10 with 5:33 to go in the game. The deficit was trimmed to 78-76 with 2:14 to go, but what happened in the final stages was a microcosm of the road woes which has plagued the team over the last two seasons. Saint Joseph's helped themselves by making five free throws in the last 1:57 to terminate the contest.
LaVonatay Fenderson led a quartet of Rangers in double figures with 16 points.
UW-Parkside shot 68 percent in the first half, getting good looks. The second half was a different story as the gang in green made good on just 34 percent of its attempts from the floor.
