UW-Parkside lost at Kentucky Wesleyan College, 90-50, earlier this season. The men's basketball game between the two schools at the DeSimone Gymnasium Thursday night was much more competitive. A superior Panther squad broke open a close game and scored a 92-75 victory.
Although the Rangers are still mathamatically alive for a playoff spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, the team is very close to elimination. The Rangers are three games behind Bellarmine (which currently holds the last spot) with just four games to play.
Kentucky Wesleyan, on the other hand, is in first place in the Eastern Division with a 12-2 record. The Panthers are an impressive 22-3 overall.
UW-Parkside is now 13-10 overall and 6-9 in league action.
The Rangers led, 39-33 with 3:05 left in the first half. A strong Panther run gave the visitors the lead at 41-39 at halftime.
The start of the second half was similar to the way the first half ended. Kentucky Wesleyan went on a 10-0 run to start the stanza. The team was never in danger of relinquishing the lead after the run.
Jeff Fahnbulleh was a monster for the Panthers. He scored a game-high 27 points to go with a game-high 17 rebounds. Maros Zuffa and Melvin Beasley each added 17 points to the winning cause.
Tyrone Deacon was the Rangers' leading scorer with 20 points.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Rangers by a 42-27 margin.
KWC shot 53 percent from the floor. The Rangers shot a respectable 45 percent.
UW-Parkside will play at Saint Joseph's Thursday, Feb. 21.
