Big second half spurs Flyers

Box Score

After the teams traded baskets in the first half of a men's basketball game at the Neil Carey Arena Tuesday night, Lewis proved to be the better team in the second half and cruised to an 88-75 victory over visiting UW-Parkside. Lewis led, 42-41 at intermission, before putting on a 26-10 run, causing the difference in the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

LaVontay Fenderson scored the first bucket for either team in the second half, giving the Rangers a 43-42 lead. From there, the Flyers took over, beginning their 26-10 run and vaulting to a 68-53 lead. UW-Parkside pulled to within seven at one point, but quickly slipped back into a double digit hole.

Lewis dominated underneath. The team dunked three on the Rangers in traffic and out-rebounded their foes by a decided 41-23 margin. UW-Parkside went cold in the second half, shooting just 37 percent from the floor, all while turning the ball over only once in the second set of 20.

All five Flyer starters scored in double figures, led by Brandon Dagans with 22 points. Jason Genova chipped in 21.

Brad Ferstenou headed the Ranger effort with 17 points. Dave Keane and #D.J. Dantzler# added 14 points apiece. Both came off the bench.

Lewis shot consistently well from the floor for the game, making good on 55 percent of its shots in the first half and 56 percent in the second stanza.

The loss drops the Rangers two-and-a-half games behind Bellarmine, the team which holds the last GLVC post season spot, with just five games left on the UW-P slate.

UW-Parkside faces a must-win situation when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. The Rangers will attempt to avenge a 40-point loss in Owensboro, Kentucky, last month.
