Kentucky Wesleyan College controlled the boards and consequently captured an 84-69 win over the UW-Parkside men's basketball team in the DeSimone Gymnasium Thursday night. The game was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
The Panthers held a decided edge of 44-24 in rebounding. A total of 16 of those Kentucky Wesleyan rebounds were on the offensive end of the floor.
Kentucky Wesleyan, ranked No. 12 in the nation in NCAA Division II, had balanced scoring with six players reaching double digits in scoring.
UW-Parkside led, 38-37, with 16:16 left in the game, thanks to a pair of free throws by Dave Keane. The lead would be short-lived as the powerful Panthers went on a 13-4 run. The Panthers extended their lead to 13 points on a three-pointer by Chris Williams to make it 64-51 with 6:10 left on the clock.
The Rangers fought back and forged to within eight points twice. The team was forced to foul in the late stages; however, KWC hit its free throws and pulled away.
Trey Harris led the Panther six-some in double digits with 15 points, including a 6-6 effort at the free throw line.
Lavontay Fenderson led the Rangers in scoring with 19 points. DaMarcus Bell added 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The win lifts Kentucky Wesleyan's record to 7-0 overall, while the Rangers fell to 2-5.
The game was televised by Time-Warner Cable Channel 32 throughout much of Wisconsin. It will be re-aired Sunday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m.; Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m.; and Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 11:30 a.m.
The Rangers look to rebound, at home, on Saturday versus Southern Indiana. A 3 p.m. tipoff is slated at the DeSimone Gymnasium. UW-Parkside won at Southern Indiana last season, 72-65. The Screaming Eagles are coming off of a 76-67 win at Lewis Thursday night.
