Rangers hammer Lakers; ready for Division I foe

D.J. Dantzler

Box Score

Both semi-final games of UW-Parkside annual Slam Dunk Diabetes Tournament were anti-climactic. In the first game, NCAA Division I North Dakota pounded Illinois Tech, 91-33. In the nightcap Friday night, UW-Parkside cruised to a 92-54 win over Silver Lake.

Silver Lake and Illinois Tech will face off in the consolation game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Rangers and the Fighting Sioux will battle for the championship at 3 p.m.

The last time the Rangers faced a Division I team at home was back on Jan. 14, 1981, when the team lost to Joe Dumars and McNeese State, 83-73. UW-Parkside has a 14-55 all-time record against Division I opponents in the regular season. The last contest against a Division I opponent was a 79-73 win over Illinois-Chicago which turned out to be Dick Vitale's Upset of the Week.

The Lakers came out strong Friday night, taking an early 9-2 lead on the Rangers. Parkside then went on a 21-0 tear to put the game away.

All but one of the Rangers got into the scoring column. LaVontay Fenderson scored 23 points, 21 of which came in the first half. Dave Keane notched 15 points and Matt Hein tallied 14 off the bench. DeMarcus Bell added a dozen.

The Rangers shot 60 percent from the floor including a 10-20 effort from behind the three-points arc.
