UW-P picks up initial win

"We had to win tonight," said UW-Parkside head coach Luke Reigel in his post-game interview on WRJN. His team did, beating Chico State at the Phoenix Inn Division II Shootout in Monmouth, Oregon, Saturday night.

The Rangers erased a 45-36 halftime deficit and scored a 94-84 win over the Wildcats. The win gives UW-Parkside a 1-3 record going into its first home game of the 2008-09 campaign.

Parkside used an 8-0 run early in the second half to take the lead. The team made good on 17 of its 19 free throws in the second half to put the game away.

#D.J. Dantzler# drained a three-point shot with 12:37 to go in the game, breaking a 58-58 deadlock. The Rangers played from the lead the rest of the night.

LaVontay Fenderson followed up his 38-point effort of the previous day with a team high 23 points. Four others finished in double digit scoring including Dantzler with 18, Craig Cunningham with 13, Dave Keane chipped in 11 and Sam Katula added 10.

The Rangers owned the boards, especially on the offensive end. UW-P grabbed 34 total rebounds, 16 on the offensive side of the court. Chico State, from the California College Athletic Conference, notched 25 total boards.

Fenderson was one of six players who were selected to the all-tournament team.

UW-Parkside will host the annual Slam Dunk Diabetes Tournament at the DeSimone Gymnasium Friday-Saturday, Nov. 28-29. In one semi-final game, NCAA Division I North Dakota will take on Illinois Tech at 5 p.m. Friday. The Rangers will face Silver Lake at 7 p.m. The consolation game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the title tilt at 3 p.m.
