Things didn't look good for the Ranger men's soccer team in the first half of a non-conference game with visiting Viterbo Saturday afternoon. The V-Hawks, who are coming off a 5-11-2 record last season, were tied with the Rangers at 1-1 despite playing two men short due to red cards.
The Rangers got their act together in the second half, scoring seven unanswered goals en route to a convincing 8-1 victory. The win was the third for the Rangers in as many tries this season. It was the season-opener for Viterbo, who will take on the
University of
Mary at noon on Sunday at Wood Road Field.
"I was disappointed at the lack of execution on both ends of the field in the first half," said UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke. "In the second half, we didn't get frustrated and made the proper corrections."
#Bojan Jovicic# scored the lone Ranger goal in the first half. It came via penalty kick. Viterbo's goal also came as a result of a penalty kick, notched by Gregg Ryder.
"Sometimes when you go up two men you get relaxed thinking it is going to be easy," said UW-Parkside head coach Rick Kilps. "We got complacent and that is not a good thing to be."
#Andrew Gamarra# sent the Rangers on their way to victory, scoring two quick goals to open the second half. Jovicic added his second goal for a 4-1 advantage. Armin Mehic and Jon Bebeau added two goals each off the bench to wrap up the scoring.
"In the second half we moved quicker," said Kilps. "On transition we made sure everyone was covered."
The V-Hawks could not muster a shot on goal in the second half, after putting two shot on net against Victor Perez in the first half. UW-Parkside notched 16 shots on goal.
The Rangers will host the
University of
Mary Labor Day at noon.
