The UW-Parkside men's soccer team opened the regular season with a home game, sort of, with visiting Findlay Saturday night. The game was played at Wilmot High School, which has a turf field. The game was moved because Wood Road Field has endured some 10 inches of rain over the past week.
Fans in the western half of the county were treated to a 3-0 Ranger win over the Oilers.
All-American Bojan Jovicic picked up where he left off last year. Now a senior, Jovicic scored two goals including the game-winner. His first goal came off of a penalty kick at 47:06. His second goal was the Rangers' third of the night on a break-a-way with an assist from Johnson Thao at 76:14.
Sandwiched in between was a goal from Thao. It came at 68:55 and was assisted by Armin Mehic.
"All of our goals tonight were the result of pin-point passing with classic build-ups," said UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke.
After a scoreless first half, the Rangers took over.
"In the first half, Findlay was thinking defense, packing it in a bit," explained Ranger head coach Rick Kilps. "After we scored, they started coming forward and we were then able to expose their defense."
Jamie Lieberman picked up the shutout in goal for the winners. He turned away four Findlay shots on goal. At the other end of the field, the Rangers put six shots on goal in the match.
"There wasn't a guy out there who had a bad game for us," reasoned Kilps. "We played a pretty clean game in the back. We looked pretty sharp."
The Rangers are scheduled to play at Wood Raod Field Wednesday, Aug. 29, when Calumet comes calling for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
"It will be nice to get on the home field," said Kilps. "We appreciate Wilmot High School allowing this game tonight to happen."
