Playing in its first ever NCAA tournament game, UW-Parkside gave homestanding Findlay, the No. 3 ranked team in the nation, all it could handle. The Rangers led by one point at 31-30 at halftime and led by as many as five in the second half before succmbing to a team which has won 53 consecutive games on its home floor.
The Oilers sent UW-Parkside home with a 74-60 season-ending loss. The Rangers ended with a 19-13 overall record, its best win total in 20 years.
Findlay advances to the second round with a 29-1 record, pushing its overall winning streak to 28 games. Findlay scored the final 10 points of the game as the Rangers were forced to gamble on defense and take quick shots as time ran down.
Tyrone Deacon led the Rangers in scoring with 25 points; however, he fouled out of the contest with 5:17 left in the game. At that point, the Rangers still held a two-point lead. Moments later, teammate Brad Ferstenou fouled out.
The Oilers took the lead for good with 5 minutes left in the contest on a three-pointer by Dorian Bass, which brought the sell out crowd to its feet and the momentum to the home team.
LaVontay Fenderson scored 10 points in the contest for the Rangers and was the team's only other double-digit scorer. Bench points were key, as the Findlay reserves out-scored the Ranger non-starters, 26-6. For more information on this game and the Great Lakes Regional, go to:
