HAMMOND, Ind. — (RV) Parkside defeated Purdue Northwest 3-2 on Tuesday. Parkside trailed by three in the fifth set before taking the lead and closing out the deciding set 15-13.
After the teams split the first two points, Parkside moved in front behind kills from
Avary Polavin,
Sierra Kilbourn and
Emily Zaper, then stretched the margin to 9-4 with a
Lucy Russ kill and two Purdue Northwest errors. Purdue Northwest answered with a four-point run, including an Anika Huelskamp ace and Katrina Soto kill, to get within 9-8, and later tied the set at 12-12 on an Addison Smith ace. The teams traded points through 15-15 before Parkside pushed ahead 19-16 on a Zaper kill and service ace. Purdue Northwest stayed within 21-19, but kills from Polavin, Zaper, Kilbourn and Zaper again carried Parkside through the finish for a 25-21 set win.
After Purdue Northwest moved in front 7-5, Parkside pulled even on a Polavin kill and an attack error, then Polavin added two more kills as the Rangers moved ahead 9-8 and stayed in a back-and-forth set. Parkside built a 15-11 lead on a Kilbourn kill and a
Samantha Molenhouse ace, and after Purdue Northwest cut the margin to 15-14, Zaper answered with a kill and an ace before Purdue Northwest tied it again at 17-17. Kilbourn put down consecutive kills to give Parkside a 21-19 edge, and a
Monica Lukasiewicz kill plus a
Natalie Harris ace helped push the Rangers ahead 23-20 before Purdue Northwest came back to tie the set at 24-24. Parkside tied the set at 25-25 on a Purdue Northwest bad set and again at 26-26 on a
Maia Olson kill, but Purdue Northwest scored the final two points to take the set 28-26.
Parkside kept the third set tight early, using kills from Polavin, Kilbourn and Olson before Lukasiewicz's kill tied it at 9-9. After ties at 10-10 and 11-11, Purdue Northwest scored three straight on a
Delanie Voss kill, a block and a Lauren Brohm ace, but kills by Kilbourn and Olson helped Parkside get back within 14-13. After the teams traded service errors to leave Purdue Northwest ahead 15-14, the home side scored six straight, including consecutive Alexandra Jelcic aces and kills by Anika Huelskamp and Chloe Deckard, to stretch the lead to 21-14.
Hailey Warfel's kill and an ace by Russ brought Parkside to 23-17, but Purdue Northwest took the final two points on kills by Kennedy Rowzee and Voss to win the set 25-17.
Parkside moved ahead after an early 3-3 tie, with Olson and Zaper combining on a block before Warfel's serve helped produce four straight points, including a
Dani Kopacz kill and a service ace, for an 8-3 lead. Purdue Northwest sided out at 8-4, but Parkside kept adding points through kills from Zaper,
Dani Kopacz, Polavin and Kilbourn to stay in front 15-8. The Rangers pushed the margin to 19-9 with a Zaper kill, an Olson kill and two Purdue Northwest attack errors, then closed the set after a Kopacz kill brought up set point and another Purdue Northwest error finished a 25-13 win.
The fifth set stayed within a point early before Purdue Northwest turned a 5-4 edge into a 9-5 lead with help from a block by Addison Smith and Kennedy Rowzee, a Parkside service error and an Anika Huelskamp kill.
Dani Kopacz answered with a kill to make it 9-6, and Russ served the next four Parkside points — an ace, Kilbourn's kill, a Purdue Northwest attack error and Polavin's kill — to put Parkside in front 10-9. Purdue Northwest tied it at 10 and again at 11, but a Kilbourn kill and Harris ace gave Parkside a 13-11 lead. After Purdue Northwest pulled even at 13-13 on consecutive Parkside attack errors, Kilbourn delivered a kill for set point and Kopacz finished the 15-13 set win with a kill from Warfel.
Parkside was led by
Emily Zaper, who finished with 15.5 points on 11 kills, 12 digs and a season-high four blocks, including one solo.
Natalie Harris recorded a team-high 23 digs to go along with six assists and two service aces, while
Lucy Russ tallied 27 assists, 13 digs and two aces.
Avary Polavin added 14 kills and 14.0 points with three digs, marking her second consecutive game with at least 14 kills.
Maia Olson contributed seven kills and 10.0 points while leading the Rangers at the net with five blocks, including one solo.
