ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — In it's conference opener, The Parkside men's soccer team fell on the road to Roosevelt 1-0 on Thursday night under the lights of Morris Field. The Rangers generated six of their 10 shots in the second half and put five shots on goal but were held scoreless. This is the Rangers' second straight match getting shut out 1-0. All three of Parkside's losses this year have been via the shutout.
The Rangers stayed close in the shot profile, with Roosevelt holding a 12-10 edge in total shots while both teams put five attempts on goal. The Rangers generated a late stretch while trailing that included three shots and two corner kicks, and
Mateusz Pass finished with four saves as Roosevelt's, Cedrik Strupler, goalkeeper stopped five.
The Rangers created the first chances when
Keven Sosa put shots on frame in the 5th minute, with Roosevelt goalkeeper Cedrik Strupler saving both. Roosevelt answered with several looks through the middle of the half, including shots by Fynn Mewes and Noah Vasilev that Pass saved as the match stayed 0-0. The half also turned physical, with the Rangers receiving yellow cards to
Valentin Sandoval,
Angel Luevano, and
Stefan Zekanovic, while
Hudson Scheiber forced another Strupler save before the Rangers earned a corner and
Massimo Juarez followed with a shot. Roosevelt had late attempts from Tim Koczulap and Omar Yousaf, with Pass saving Yousaf's shot just before halftime, and the teams went into halftime scoreless.
The Rangers put the first shot of the second half wide through Luevano in the 47th minute, but Roosevelt created the next chances, including two attempts from Fynn Mewes and a Nikola Dimitrijevic shot that Pass saved in the 63rd minute.
The game's only goal came in the 65th minute, and it would prove to be the game-winner. Roosevelt's Fynn Mewes worked around two defenders and ripped a low shot from just inside the arc into the lower right corner past a diving
Mateusz Pass.
The Rangers pushed back with a corner kick, a Sosa shot saved, two more corners, and additional attempts from Luevano, Sosa, and Zekanovic, while the late stretch also included two Rangers yellow cards and multiple Roosevelt fouls. The Rangers could not find the equalizer before the end of the second half, and Roosevelt held on for the 1-0 final. Parkside has now lost all three times it has ever played at Morris Field.
Sosa recorded four shots and put three on goal. Pass played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with four saves. Zekanovic added two shots, including one on goal.
The Rangers are 2-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 to begin GLIAC play. Roosevelt is 3-0-2 overall and 1-0-0 to start GLIAC play. Roosevelt now leads the all-time series between the two 3-2-2.
