UTICA, Mich. — The Parkside Rangers dropped their second-round matchup of the GLIAC Tournament on Friday night, falling 7-1 to Davenport at UWM Field in the double-elimination tournament.
Davenport struck first in the opening inning after a pair of wild pitches moved Justin Johnson to third before an RBI sacrifice fly gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Panthers added another run in the second on an RBI double from Julian Contreras and extended the lead to 3-0 in the third when Johnson launched a solo home run to center field.
Parkside starter Keegan Waters worked four innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks. Peter Mulhern provided strong relief in the middle innings, striking out two while allowing just one unearned run over 1.2 innings. Mateo Fuentes followed with two-thirds of a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
The Rangers got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Josh Wicker connected on a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to 3-1. Wicker accounted for Parkside's lone RBI, while Noah Goddard, Joe Mrowiec and Trace Kirchberg each added hits.
Davenport answered in the bottom half of the sixth as Wyatt Epple delivered an RBI double to make it 4-1.
Carson Klaus entered in relief during the seventh inning and stranded runners with a strikeout to keep the Rangers within reach, but Davenport added three insurance runs in the eighth. Ben Korson led off the inning with a solo homer before Epple added an RBI single and Cody Hultink drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-1. Chase Powrozek recorded the final out of the inning in relief.
