ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Parkside softball team was swept Sunday afternoon by Grand Valley State at the GVSU Softball Field, falling 6-0 in game one before dropping a tight 1-0 decision in eight innings in game two.
The losses brought Parkside's five-game winning streak to an end. The Rangers are now 18-24 overall and 9-11 in GLIAC play after finishing the regular-season series 1-3 against the Lakers.
GAME ONE (GRAND VALLEY STATE 6, PARKSIDE 0):
Grand Valley State took control with a four-run third inning in the opener and never let Parkside get its offense going.
The Rangers were held hitless throughout the game, with only three baserunners reaching on walks. Grand Valley starter Karli Dorr was sharp from the outset, striking out seven and working a complete-game shutout.
Parkside's best early chance came in the fourth when Megan Medlin drew a walk, but Dorr worked around it and kept the Rangers from generating any sustained pressure.
Grand Valley broke through in the third. Brynn Taliercio reached on an error to open the inning, and after Camryn Hall singled, Eliana Eiland delivered an RBI hit to bring home the first run. Elizabeth Wesoloski followed with a bunt single that plated another, Kylee Hoebeke added an RBI single, and Faith Edwards dropped down a bunt single that brought home the fourth run of the inning, pushing the Lakers in front 4-0.
The Lakers added another in the fourth when Hall singled, stole second and eventually scored on a Parkside error. Grand Valley's final run came in the sixth after Taliercio singled, moved up on a walk and sacrifice bunt, and scored on Eiland's sacrifice fly.
Casey Jo Vermett took the loss after allowing five hits and four runs, two earned, over three innings while striking out three. Melanie Andrysiak threw the final three innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits.
Grand Valley finished with seven hits in the opener. Hall went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Eiland drove in two, and Wesoloski, Hoebeke and Edwards each added RBI. Taliercio scored twice for the Lakers.
GAME TWO (GRAND VALLEY STATE 1, PARKSIDE 0 [8 INN]):
The second game was a much different story, as the Rangers matched Grand Valley pitch for pitch before the Lakers walked it off in the eighth inning.
Parkside had more chances in the nightcap, collecting four hits and putting runners on in multiple innings, but could not break through against Kylie Swierkos.
The Rangers threatened in the third when Mia Johnson singled, Ava Swain walked and Isabel Aranda walked to load the bases with two outs, but Swierkos escaped the inning with a flyout to right.
Parkside also put runners on in the sixth when Aranda reached on an error and Medlin followed with a single to short, but the Rangers again came away empty after a flyout and two more outs ended the threat.
Melanie Andrysiak started and gave Parkside two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Vermett entered in the third and was excellent in relief, holding the Lakers scoreless through the seventh while working around traffic in both the fifth and sixth.
Grand Valley finally ended it in the bottom of the eighth. Kylee Hoebeke drew a leadoff walk, Grace Usher moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and after a popout, MaryJane Goodman reached on an error at second that allowed the winning run to score for a 1-0 walk-off.
Parkside finished with four hits in game two. Johnson, Medlin, Taylor Utrata and Aranda each had one, while Swain and Aranda both added walks. Medlin went 2-for-4, and the Rangers stranded seven runners.
Vermett took the tough-luck loss in relief, allowing three hits and one unearned run over 5.2 innings while striking out four and walking five. Andrysiak's two scoreless innings helped keep the Rangers in position throughout the afternoon.
Grand Valley also managed only four hits in the second game. Camryn Hall had two, Allyson Theunick doubled, and the Lakers drew six walks but were held off the scoreboard until the eighth.
The Rangers now return home Wednesday, April 22, to host Lewis for one final non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. CT at Case Softball Complex.
