Rangers Open Series At SVSU With 7-2 Win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Parkside opened the series with a strong all-around performance, defeating Saginaw Valley State 7-2 on Friday afternoon in GLIAC play. The Rangers improved to 13-9 overall and 2-3 in conference action with the win.

Parkside jumped on the board early in the first inning, capitalizing on a throwing error before Dylan Sayles delivered an RBI single to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. That advantage held through the early innings as starting pitcher Keegan Waters worked out of multiple jams, allowing just one hit over his five scoreless innings while issuing six walks and striking out three.

The Rangers added to their lead in the fourth inning. After Sayles reached and Josh Wicker singled, Angel Rades moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Joe Mrowiec followed with a clutch two-out single through the right side, driving in both runs to extend the lead to 3-0.

Saginaw Valley State broke through in the seventh inning, scoring twice to cut the deficit to 3-2. Parkside responded immediately in the eighth, taking advantage of a defensive miscue. Sayles walked, stole third, and came home on a throwing error by the catcher to push the lead to 4-2.

The Rangers created separation in the ninth with a three-run inning. Mrowiec started the rally with a walk, and Nathan Hanel followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Nolan Maciejewski brought home a run on a fielder's choice, and Benjamin Loyd delivered an RBI double to left field. Moments later, Sayles swiped second as Loyd came around to score, capping the scoring at 7-2.

Parkside finished with eight hits on the afternoon, led by Loyd, who recorded two doubles and scored twice. Mrowiec drove in two runs, while Hanel added a pair of hits. Sayles reached base four times, scored twice, drove in a run, and added two stolen bases.

On the mound, Waters earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season. Isaiah Terrell allowed two runs in relief, while Austin Grube and Leo Berger combined to hold Saginaw Valley scoreless over the final two innings to secure the victory.

The two teams will continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon central time.
