KENOSHA, Wis. — Wayne State spoiled Senior Day at De Simone Arena on Saturday afternoon, using a decisive third-quarter push and a big game from Gabi Lutchka to knock off Parkside 63-54.
The Rangers (13-13, 8-10 GLIAC) hung within three at halftime, but the Warriors (20-6, 15-3 GLIAC) created separation coming out of the break and never fully let go, even as Parkside made one final late run in the closing seconds.
Wayne State set the tone early from the perimeter, going 3-for-5 from three in the opening quarter and taking a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes. Parkside was scoreless from deep in the first (0-for-6 from three), but stayed within range behind early paint touches and second-chance chances, with the Rangers finishing the game with 28 points in the paint and 10 second-chance points.
Parkside's best stretch came in the second quarter. The Rangers won the period 12-10 to trim the deficit to 27-24 at the break, fueled by Lexi Bugajski's shooting and activity on both ends. Bugajski finished with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting and 3-for-6 from three, adding six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The game turned in the third. Wayne State outscored Parkside 20-15 in the period to stretch the lead to 47-39, cashing in on turnovers and controlling the glass. Wayne State finished with 20 points off turnovers and forced 24 Parkside turnovers, while also winning the rebounding battle 45-35.
Lutchka and McKenna Ferguson spearheaded the third-quarter lift and the closing push. Lutchka posted 20 points on 6-for-14 shooting and 5-for-9 from three to go with six rebounds and four steals in 40 minutes. Ferguson added 17 points and nine rebounds, getting to the line for 10 free-throw attempts and converting eight, part of Wayne State's 12-for-17 day at the stripe.
Parkside continued to fight, but the missed threes piled up. The Rangers finished 4-for-28 from long range, and even with 15 assists on 21 made field goals, the shooting margin was difficult to overcome as Parkside shot 31% overall (21-for-67) compared to Wayne State's 42% (22-for-53).
Wayne State's lead reached as many as 16 late in the fourth, but Parkside kept attacking the rim to the horn. Cassidy Arni scored 12 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Jaelyn Derlein added 11 points and three assists. Alli Hampel anchored the glass with 10 rebounds and chipped in eight points as the Rangers continued to manufacture extra possessions.
Parkside will conclude the regular season next weekend with a two-game trip to the Upper Peninsula, beginning Thursday, Feb. 26.
