Parkside Sweeps Michigan Tech for Seventh Sweep of the Season

KENOSHA, Wis. — (RV)The Parkside volleyball team earned its seventh sweep of the season Friday night, defeating Michigan Tech 3-0 at De Simone Arena with set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-19. Avary Polavin led the Rangers with 15 kills as Parkside improved to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in GLIAC play.
 
After Michigan Tech moved in front 3-2, Sierra Kilbourn tied the set with a kill and Parkside added points on an Alms block, an Emily Zaper kill and a Reuter ace to go up 6-3. Michigan Tech answered with three straight points to take a 7-6 lead, and the teams traded points until a Michigan Tech kill tied the set at 14-14. From there, Parkside won seven of the next eight rallies, moving ahead 21-15 with an Alms block, three Avary Polavin kills and two Michigan Tech attack errors during Natalie Harris' service turn. Michigan Tech pulled within 21-19, but kills from Polavin and Zaper kept Parkside in front before Kilbourn closed the set with a kill for a 25-22 win.
 
After the second set was tied at 8-8, Parkside moved ahead 12-8 behind a kill by Polavin, consecutive kills from Zaper and a Michigan Tech attack error. Michigan Tech worked back to 13-11, but Zaper's kill returned the serve to Parkside, and Masina Reuter's service turn helped push the lead to 18-11 with an Alms kill and three Michigan Tech attack errors. Michigan Tech answered with five straight points to get within 18-16, including two kills by Paige Wagner, before Parkside steadied the set with points from Polavin and Zaper to stay in front. A Kilbourn kill made it 23-19, and Parkside took the final two points on Michigan Tech attack errors, the last on a block by Zaper and Maia Olson, to win the set 25-19.
 
After Michigan Tech moved ahead 5-3 on kills by Kayla Heinonen and Jacqueline Yancy, Zaper put Parkside back on serve with a kill. Zaper then served eight straight points as Parkside turned the set to 12-5, with three aces, kills by Monica Lukasiewicz, Polavin and Dani Kopacz, and a block by Lukasiewicz and Kopacz contributing to the 9-0 run. Parkside later pushed the lead from 13-8 to 17-8 with help from a Michigan Tech service error, two attack errors and another Polavin kill. Michigan Tech cut the margin from 23-16 to 23-19 late, but Polavin answered with a kill for set point before an attack error closed Parkside's 25-19 set win.
 
Avary Polavin led the Rangers with 15 kills and 15.5 points, adding one block assist. Emily Zaper recorded nine kills, a team-high three service aces, 15 digs and 13.0 points. Natalie Harris led the team with 17 digs and added eight assists, marking her sixth consecutive game with 17 or more digs. Lucy Russ paced Parkside with 17 assists and contributed seven digs, while Sierra Kilbourn tallied eight kills with a .286 hitting percentage.
 
Parkside is 12-5 overall and 5-4 in GLIAC play. Michigan Tech is 9-8 overall and 5-4 in GLIAC play.
