Wis. — (RV) Parkside volleyball team fell to Saginaw Valley State in four sets Saturday, dropping the match 25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 25 23. The Rangers rallied to win the third set and battled back late in the fourth, but the Cardinals held on to secure the victory.
The Rangers started the opening set with a
Sierra Kilbourn kill from
Lucy Russ, a
Maia Olson ace and a Russ kill from
Lauren Peters for a 3-0 lead, and
Emily Zaper's kill later made it 4-1. Saginaw Valley answered with six straight points, getting kills from Rachel Townsend and Jackie Scheiber along with Rangers attack errors to move in front 7-4. The Rangers worked back into the set behind a
Dani Kopacz kill, a Kopacz-Olson block, kills from Olson,
Avary Polavin and Kilbourn, and a Peters ace that tied it at 12-12. Saginaw Valley moved back ahead 15-12, and after the Rangers cut it to 15-14 on a Kilbourn kill and a Saginaw Valley bad set, the visitors scored 10 of the final 11 points to take the set 25-15.
The Rangers erased a 2-0 deficit in the second set and moved ahead 5-3 behind kills from Polavin and
Dani Kopacz, along with Saginaw Valley errors. Kilbourn helped keep the Rangers in front early with multiple kills, but Saginaw Valley tied the set at 8-8 and later used a three-point stretch to take a 12-9 lead. After Saginaw Valley pushed the margin to 20-15, the Rangers pulled within 20-18 on a Kilbourn kill, a Saginaw Valley attack error and a block by
Monica Lukasiewicz and Kopacz. Saginaw Valley answered with three straight points, reached set point at 24-19 and closed the set 25-19 on a Rangers attack error.
After the teams traded points to 4-4, the Rangers won seven of the next eight rallies to move in front 11-5, with
Dani Kopacz starting the stretch with a kill, Lukasiewicz adding three kills and Polavin putting down another. Saginaw Valley continued to get points from Rachel Townsend, but the Rangers stayed in front, reaching 17-10 on a Kopacz kill and 21-14 on
Sierra Kilbourn's kill. Saginaw Valley took the next three points, including kills by Townsend and Jackie Scheiber, to close to 21-17 before Kilbourn and Olson answered with kills for the Rangers. Saginaw Valley pulled within 23-19 on a service ace by Ava Beard, but Kopacz's kill brought up set point at 24-19, and after Ava Decker's kill, Chloe Vanwinkle's service error ended the set at 25-20.
Kills by Lukasiewicz and Kilbourn gave the Rangers the first two points of the fourth set, but Saginaw Valley drew even at 5-5 on Ava Beard's ace and later moved ahead 8-7 on a block credited to Taylor Smith and Marissa Roe. A Saginaw Valley service error tied it at 8-8, and Russ served the Rangers through five straight points, including two Polavin kills plus kills from Lukasiewicz and Kilbourn, to put the Rangers ahead 13-8. Saginaw Valley later turned a 15-11 deficit into a 17-15 lead with six straight points, including two service aces by Kelsey Foster, and pushed the margin to 20-16. The Rangers worked back from there and tied the set at 22-22 on Kilbourn's kill, but Saginaw Valley answered with two straight points and, after Kilbourn's kill made it 24-23, Jackie Scheiber ended the set 25-23 with a kill.
Sierra Kilbourn led the Rangers with 18 kills, a .452 hitting percentage and 18 points.
Natalie Harris recorded a team-high 22 digs and added four assists, while
Lucy Russ tallied 31 assists and six digs, adding a kill on her lone attempt.
Avary Polavin contributed 12 kills with a .258 hitting percentage and two digs, marking her second consecutive match with at least 12 kills.
Masina Reuter also contributed with 16 assists and eight digs.
The Rangers are 12-6 overall and 5-5 in GLIAC play. Saginaw Valley is 13-6 overall and 6-4 in GLIAC play.
