ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Parkside men's soccer fought from behind twice and earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Lewis on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium, thanks to a pair of goals from Eduardo Aguilera-Guillen and a standout performance in goal by Daniyal Rana.
The Flyers (1-0-1) dictated much of the play, outshooting the Rangers 20-4 and holding an 8-2 advantage in shots on target. Despite the lopsided numbers, Rana kept Parkside alive with six saves, several of them in outstanding fashion, as Lewis threatened to extend its lead multiple times.
Lewis opened the scoring in the 35th minute through Mikey Revell and regained the advantage in the 61st minute when Lucas Lloyd put away a cross from Lance Somerfield.
Parkside (0-1-1) had an answer both times, and it was Aguilera-Guillen who supplied the finishing touch. His first equalizer came in the 53rd minute off a setup from freshman Carlos Manjarrez. Then, in the 80th minute, the Rangers' attack produced one of the highlights of the young season. Sophomore midfielder Angel Luevano, with his back to his defender, slipped a nutmeg pass through the defender's legs to Manjarrez. The freshman then delivered a perfectly placed ball into the box for a cutting Aguilera-Guillen, who buried the chance to level the match at 2-2.
The Flyers continued to press late, but Rana stood tall again, denying multiple efforts to preserve the result.
Aguilera-Guillen finished with three shots, two on target, and both of Parkside's goals. Manjarrez notched a pair of assists in his freshman performance.
The Rangers wrap up non-conference play on the road at Maryville on Thursday, Sept. 11 at noon. Full coverage is available at parksiderangers.com/coverage.
