ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Parkside men's soccer team suffered a tough 2–1 defeat on the road at Maryville on Thursday afternoon, conceding the game-winning goal less than two minutes after tying the match late in the second half.
After a scoreless first half, much of the credit belonged to Parkside (0-2-1) goalkeeper Daniyal Rana, who made four first-half saves to keep the Saints off the board and the game level at the break. Maryville (1-1-1), however, controlled the offensive flow throughout the afternoon, outshooting the Rangers 25–8 overall and 13–2 on goal, while also earning an 11–1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Saints finally broke through in the 69th minute on a perfectly placed cross from Luca Alessandro Ferraro to Sebastian Weitlaner, who finished with a header into an open net to give Maryville a 1–0 lead.
Parkside fought back and found its equalizer in the 86th minute. Off a set piece from Keven Sosa over the top of the defense, Jaime Vazquez rose above the back line and headed in the tying goal to make it 1–1, giving the Rangers hope for a late comeback.
But the Saints had the final say. Less than two minutes later, Tommy Barrell sent in a cross that found Marcos Ayelo, who headed in the game-winner at the 88:49 mark, sealing a 2–1 victory for Maryville and handing Parkside a crushing defeat.
The loss overshadowed a standout performance from Rana, who finished with 11 saves in total to keep the Rangers within striking distance.
Parkside will look to bounce back in its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 14, at noon at Wood Road Field as the Rangers continue to search for their first victory of the season.
