KENOSHA, Wis. — The Parkside women's soccer team dropped its season opener Friday at Wood Road Field, falling 2-1 to Winona State. The loss marked Parkside's second straight defeat to the Warriors, while Winona State secured its first season-opening victory since 2018.
The Warriors (1-0-0) struck first in the 12th minute when Kyleigh Jannisch found the back of the net off an assist from Madisson Watts. The Rangers (0-1-0) responded in the 19th minute when redshirt-sophomore midfielder Carley Nolte opened her collegiate account in fashion, blasting a shot from distance that clipped off the post and in to level the match at 1-1.
The deciding goal came in the 72nd minute, when Parkside was whistled for a handball inside the box. Winona State's Madelynn Drasher converted the ensuing penalty kick to give the Warriors the lead. The Rangers pressed late, including a shot on goal from Makayla Wesemann in the 74th minute, but WSU goalkeeper Abigail Rounds stood tall to preserve the victory.
Both goalkeepers made their first collegiate starts. Parkside's Lindsey Ferrara recorded five saves, while Rounds notched three saves and earned the win in her debut.
Parkside will look to bounce back Sunday when the Rangers travel to Romeoville, Illinois, to face Lewis University. The match is part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
