Rangers Settle for 2-2 Draw at Lewis After Late Flyers Rally

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Parkside women's soccer came agonizingly close to its first victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, but a pair of late goals from Lewis forced the Rangers to settle for a 2-2 draw at Lewis Stadium.

The Rangers (0-1-1) jumped on the board early when Carley Nolte jumped on a rebound in the box and scored in the 12th minute to give Parkside a 1-0 advantage. The tally marked Nolte's second goal in as many games to open the season.

After carrying the lead into halftime, Parkside doubled its lead midway through the second period. Off a corner kick in the 55th minute, Emily Mikkelson sent a dangerous ball into the box that found Grace Breuchel. Breuchel's shot was initially waved off, but after the officials conferred, it was determined the ball had fully crossed the line, awarding Parkside the goal and a 2-0 lead.

Lewis (1-0-1) refused to go away quietly. The Flyers turned to Breanna Culver, who powered home goals in the 70th and 83rd minutes to erase the deficit and pull the match level at 2-2.

Parkside nearly had the last word in the game's closing moments. With just seconds remaining, Mikkelson delivered another cross into the box that connected with Ava Rizzitano, who slotted it into the back of the net. However, the final horn sounded as Rizzitano struck the ball, and the potential game-winner was waved off, sealing the 2-2 result.

The Rangers recorded 10 shots and seven corner kicks on the day, while Lewis posted 17 shots and five corners. The contest also featured collegiate debuts in net for two Parkside goalkeepers. Rebecca DuFour started the first half and made a pair of key saves to preserve the Rangers' early lead. Tabi Lemens took over after halftime and added another save in her first collegiate action.

The Rangers hit the road again next weekend, traveling to St. Cloud, Minn. to take on the Huskies of St. Cloud State on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. The contest will be the first of two matches for Parkside in Minnesota. For live coverage, visit parksiderangers.com/coverage.
