Luevano’s first career goal lifts Parkside to last minute win at Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. – Freshman Angel Luevano scored his first collegiate goal in the 89th minute to send Wisconsin-Parkside (2-3-1, 2-1-0 GLIAC) past Purdue Northwest (1-6-1, 0-2-1 GLIAC) 1-0 Sunday at Pepsi Field, as the Rangers bounced back after Friday's road loss at Roosevelt.

Parkside leaned heavily on goalkeeper Daniyal Rana throughout the first half as the Pride fired off 13 corners and eight first-half shots. Rana stood tall with three first-half saves, including a diving stop on Aloe Berassa in the 19th minute, a punch clear on Hugo Lorenzo's strike in the 33rd, and a reaction save on Rami Hassan Zantout in the 38th to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

The second half brought more pressure from the Pride, but Rana continued to keep Parkside level. He denied Lorenzo again in the 56th minute, stopped back-to-back efforts from Zantout and Berassa in the 61st, and made two more saves on Nikola Ivetic in the 70th and Carson Byblow in the 77th to preserve the shutout.

With just over a minute left in regulation, the breakthrough finally came. Stefan Zekanovic surged down the right touchline, fighting through a challenge after the ball was poked loose, before regaining possession and slipping a pass across the front of goal. Luevano timed his run perfectly, slotting the game-winner inside the right post at the 88:23 mark to secure the road win.

Rana's eight-save performance delivered Parkside's first shutout of the season, as the Rangers overcame a 13-4 disadvantage in corners and were outshot 18-14 overall. The Pride also held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, but Parkside found the game's lone goal when it mattered most.

The Rangers return to action Friday, Oct. 3, visiting St. Cloud State at 7 p.m.
