BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Parkside softball team returned to the diamond on Sunday afternoon. Fresh off a sweep of Davenport just the day before the Rangers were looking to stretch their win streak against the Ferris State Bulldogs. Ferris State would stop the Rangers win streak and take both games of the doubleheader on Sunday.
Game one
Despite a fast start and multi-hit performance from
Megan Medlin, Parkside dropped game one against Ferris State, 10-4, on Sunday afternoon.
Parkside opened the scoring in the top of the first when
Mia Johnson led off with a single and later came around to score on an RBI single up the middle from
Ava Swain. However, Ferris State answered with three runs in the home half of the inning, and never trailed again.
The Rangers clawed back with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Medlin ripped a double to left and was driven in by an RBI single from
Rylee Baetz. After a base hit from
Taylor Utrata and an error by the Bulldogs, Johnson worked a bases-loaded walk to plate another run, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
Medlin continued her hot streak at the plate with a triple in the fifth, eventually scoring on a Ferris State miscue to bring the score to 6-4. The Bulldogs, however, responded with runs in the fifth and sixth to extend their lead, including a key two-run single that was followed by a defensive miscue in the outfield. Ferris State would pick up the 10-4 victory.
Game Two
Despite a strong start and a sixth-inning rally, Parkside came up just short in a 4-2 loss to Ferris State on Sunday in game two of the doubleheader at the FSU Softball Field.
The Rangers struck first, with
Mia Johnson ripping a leadoff double in the top of the first and scoring on a single from
Haley Remington to give Parkside an early 1-0 edge. The Ranger defense kept Ferris State off the board through the opening frame, but the Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
Parkside put pressure on Ferris State in the fourth, advancing a runner to third, but couldn't convert. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to timely hitting and a pair of RBI from their middle of the lineup.
The Rangers made things interesting in the sixth. After a leadoff single from
Ava Swain, Parkside strung together back-to-back hits from
Megan Medlin and
Toni Rodriguez, with Rodriguez driving in a run to trim the deficit to 4-2. A walk from pinch hitter CiCi Di Silvio loaded the bases with two outs, but the Bulldogs escaped the jam with a strikeout to end the inning. They would hold on to take the 4-2 win.
