AUGUSTA, Mich. — The Parkside Women's Golf Team opened play at the 2024 GLIAC Conference Championshipon Friday, finishing 7th overall after Round 1 at Stonehedge North Golf Club with a team score of +44 (332). In their final tournament of the spring season, the Rangers battled through a tough layout and closed strong, playing the final four holes at +6 as a team to edge out Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State on the Day 1 leaderboard.
Stonehedge North, ranked among the top-50 public courses in the U.S. in 2014, provided a championship-level challenge with a scoring average of +8 (80) across the field.
AJ Powell led the way for Parkside with an impressive 75 (+3), placing her in a tie for 9th overall. Powell caught fire on the back nine, carding a one-under-par 35, including back-to-back birdies on holes 5 and 6. She also played the par-4s at -1, ranking second-best in the field on those holes. AJ will look to close out her regular season on a high note in Saturday's final round.
Dulce Gefke turned in one of her strongest rounds of the year with an 82 (+10), putting her in T-32 heading into the final round. Gefke took advantage of precise approach shots on holes 6 and 16, gaining valuable strokes against the field.
Sarah Arsich, making her GLIAC Championship debut, shot an 86 (+14) and sits in a tie for 38th. The freshman closed well, finishing with four pars over her final five holes to build momentum into Day 2.
Kayla Warner, also in her first conference championship appearance, carded an 89 (+17) and enters Round 2 in a tie for 41st place.
Stella Ruffalo overcame a slow start to shoot a 90 (+18). Her back nine included multiple pars and a birdie on hole 1, helping her finish the day in 43rd place.
The Rangers return to the course Saturday morning for the final round of stroke play at the GLIAC Championship.
