Rangers Ready for Split-Site Weekend

2/5/2025 8:15:00 AM

Kenosha, Wis. – After a full weekend at home, the Parkside Rangers are set for a split-site matchup. The Rangers will hit the road Thursday night for a battle against the Roosevelt Lakers before returning home Saturday to face the Purdue Northwest Pride. Both games will mark the conclusion of Parkside's season series with each opponent.

Last weekend for the Rangers:
Parkside split their battles last weekend at home, beginning with a dominant victory over Saginaw Valley State but concluding with a loss to Wayne State. Beginning with the win, Parkside posted one of their best performances of the season in conference games, winning 73-50. The Rangers were shot out of a cannon, literally, with Cassidy Arni controlling the tip and taking it right to the basket in four seconds. However, it was Chloe Van Zeeland who was the star, netting 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Van Zeeland also recorded her first career Parkside double-double. Three other Rangers joined her in double figures, with Lillie Petersen scoring 12 on a career-high four made threes, and Arni and Peighton Nelson with 12 and 10, respectively.

However, Parkside would fall to Wayne State on Saturday. The Rangers played an excellent first quarter, leading 23-19 after one. But the second quarter was the difference, as Parkside was outscored 21-5 in the following 10 minutes. The Rangers adjusted and won the third quarter and tied the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough in the end. Van Zeeland remained incredible at home, logging another 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Petersen also nailed three more triples and finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

As it stands today, Parkside is 12-7 overall and 7-5 in conference play. They are in sole possession of fifth place in the conference, just one game behind third and two games behind second.

FULL GAME NOTES HERE

Scouting Roosevelt:
In their first season in the GLIAC, the Lakers have been an evolving squad, turning heads as time has gone on. After being selected to finish 10th in the GLIAC Preseason Poll, they have defied odds and made the adjustment to the Division II level seem much smoother. In fact, they enter the weekend on a two-game win streak after a trip up north to Sault Ste. Marie and Big Rapids. They picked up their fifth and by far most impressive victory of the season against Ferris State on Monday night. Three players scored 20 or more points, with Luka Malinka leading the way with 27 points, knocking down six triples in the process. The Lakers stunned the GLIAC with the victory, slotting them into the eighth-place spot with a three-game cushion.

Malinka has without a doubt been the catalyst this season, averaging a team-best 13.7 points per night. Including her big night against Ferris State, she has scored more than 20 points on five different occasions. However, she was held to just four against Parkside in their first meeting and will look to make an adjustment Thursday. Jayla Turchin has been a factor on both sides of the floor, averaging 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game.

Scouting Purdue Northwest:
The Pride has struggled in the 2024-25 campaign, as they are just 2-10 in conference play. They have lost three consecutive games and four of their last five since January 18. Their only two conference wins have come against two-win GLIAC teams, Davenport and Lake Superior State. However, the Pride still pose a serious threat, as they battled with the Rangers in Hammond in early January, losing just 69-60. One aspect that works against the Pride is that they are just 1-8 in road games compared to 4-7 at home.

Junior Alyssa Cole leads the Pride, averaging 12.2 points per game. In fact, she led the Pride in scoring against Parkside, netting 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She has been in double figures in 17 of 20 games this season.

History:
After meeting for the first time ever earlier in January, Parkside and Roosevelt are set to write chapter two of their all-time series this weekend in Chicago. Parkside won the game comfortably and will look to make it two in a row in the Windy City. Additionally, Parkside will look to retain their perfect record against Purdue Northwest on Saturday, entering the contest 16-0 all-time.
