Rangers’ season comes to close after PK loss to Davenport

KENOSHA, Wis. — Parkside's season ended in the GLIAC quarterfinals on Sunday after a 2-2 draw and an 8-7 penalty-kick defeat to Davenport at Wood Road Field. The result goes down as a tie for the Rangers, who finish 5-5-6 overall and 5-3-4 in GLIAC play. Davenport advances at 4-7-6 (3-5-4 GLIAC) and will face top seed Saginaw Valley State next week in University Center, Mich.

It was a brutal afternoon weather-wise. Snow was cleared from the field before kickoff, temperatures hovered at 33 degrees, winds gusted up to 30 mph, and a low, overcast sky hung over all 110 minutes and the shootout.

Parkside struck first in the eighth minute. Yeison Santos threaded a pass between two defenders to Eduardo Aguilera-Guillen, who turned at the top of the arc and buried a low drive inside the left post at 7:17 for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The Rangers took that 1-0 lead into halftime behind a busy back line and goalkeeper Daniyal Rana's first-half stops.

Davenport leveled early in the second half. At 50:58, Easton Lopez ran onto a lead ball down the right from Drew Matyunas, and his shot — with a secondary assist to Charlie Davis — bounced high off Rana's gloves, off the crossbar, and in to make it 1-1.

Parkside answered in the 66th minute when freshman Angel Luevano lofted a high, arcing pass from 35 yards that Aguilera-Guillen won in the box, beating goalkeeper Beau Hudd to the ball and heading home for his second of the day at 66:08.

Just 44 seconds later, the Panthers equalized again. Off a throw-in, Aidan Orth found Max Wilhelm free on the right edge of the arc, and Wilhelm drove a shot off the left post and in at 66:52 to tie it 2-2.

Rana kept Parkside level through a barrage the rest of the way. Davenport outshot the Rangers 39-20, put 18 shots on target to Parkside's 8, and owned a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks, reflecting long spells of possession. Rana made a career-high 16 saves, including three in the first overtime period, while Hudd finished with six for the Panthers. Parkside's best late looks came through Aguilera-Guillen and Keven Sosa, but the match moved to penalties after two scoreless 10-minute overtimes.

The shootout turned clinical until the final kick. The first 15 attempts were converted, including Hudd scoring Davenport's opening try and seven straight makes from each side. With the Panthers up 8-7, Rana stepped to the spot for the Rangers' eighth kick and aimed for the top left, but Hudd dove to make the deciding save and send Davenport through.

Aguilera-Guillen led Parkside with six shots, three on goal, and both goals. Santos recorded an assist among his four attempts, and Luevano added the other assist. For Davenport, Lopez finished with a goal on six shots, Wilhelm scored on three shots, and Matyunas (three shots) and Davis (five shots) had assists. Fouls were even at 10-10, and five yellow cards were issued to the visitors.
