Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mateski Stays Hot as Rangers Rout Bethel 95-61

KENOSHA, Wis. — Parkside men's basketball handled its business on Tuesday night, rolling past Division III Bethel (Minn.) 95-61 at De Simone Arena in a matchup that marked a meaningful homecoming for first-year Royals head coach and former Parkside assistant Gabe Miller. The win moves the Rangers to 2-1 on the season, while the contest served as an exhibition for Bethel.

The Rangers controlled things early, jumping out to a steady lead behind efficient inside scoring and transition offense. After Bethel briefly kept the margin within single digits, Parkside responded with a 15-3 push midway through the first half. Luka Mateski powered the run with a pair of downhill finishes, while Josiah Palmer buried two threes and Fawaz Surakat added a transition layup. A late Bethel surge trimmed the deficit, but a Palmer bucket in the closing seconds sent Parkside into halftime up 43-30.

Parkside blew the game open early in the second half. The Rangers opened with a 17-7 burst fueled by a Palmer three, back-to-back dunks from Surakat and a deep wing jumper from Mateski. The lead quickly stretched past 20, and Parkside poured in 52 points after halftime while holding Bethel to 31.

Mateski continued his strong start to the season with his third straight 20-plus-point night, finishing with 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including 2-for-4 from deep and a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. Surakat delivered another efficient effort inside with 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting, a team-high seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Parkside's depth was on full display, as all but one active Ranger scored. Palmer added 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting with four assists, while Braden McGlothlin packed the stat sheet with nine points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Off the bench, Andrew Soenksen and Hudson Kirby combined for 12 points and seven boards, while Jake Dunham and Matas Castillo each chipped in seven.

The Rangers shot 49 percent from the field (33-for-68), 29 percent from three (9-for-31) and 69 percent at the line (20-for-29). Parkside held a 43-28 rebounding edge, including 15 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. They outscored Bethel 42-14 in the paint and 21-4 on the fast break, while turning 18 Royals turnovers into 24 points.

Bethel was led by Nick Burke, who scored 14 points with five rebounds, while Evan Murray and Sam Gingras added eight each. The Royals shot 34 percent from the floor (17-for-50) and 39 percent from three (9-for-23).

Parkside continues its seven-game homestand on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT, hosting regional foe Winona State. To keep up with the Rangers, visit parksiderangers.com/coverage.
