KENOSHA, Wis. — Parkside men's soccer stunned No. 17 Saginaw Valley State 2-1 on Sunday at Wood Road Field, winning it on Stefan Zekanovic's breakaway finish in the 88th minute to cap a gritty, momentum-swinging thriller. The Rangers leaned on goalkeeper Daniyal Rana, who made nine saves to anchor a resilient defensive effort.
For long stretches, SVSU owned the stat sheet, but Parkside stood tall and seized the game's decisive moments. The Cardinals outshot the Rangers 23-10 (12-2 in the first half), held an 11-4 edge in shots on goal, and led 9-2 in corner kicks. Still, Rana turned aside chance after chance, and Parkside added a team save to blunt the pressure.
The breakthrough came at 68:38 when Jamie Le Comte sent a left-to-right ball into the box that kept bending and tucked into the top-right corner for a 1-0 lead.
SVSU answered at 78:34 off a long free kick from beyond midfield by goalkeeper Nick Kay. In the ensuing traffic, Logan Kunnen pounced to level it 1-1.
Parkside had the last laugh. After an SVSU corner, Rana punched clear a high, looping ball. On the left wing, Eduardo Aguilera-Guillen stripped a defender and slipped Zekanovic into space. The sophomore chipped past Kay into the right side at 87:19 for the winner.
Le Comte finished with two shots (both on frame) and the opener. Zekanovic scored on two attempts, and Aguilera-Guillen logged the assist with two shots. For SVSU, Eoin Farrell recorded four shots (two on goal), and Kunnen converted his late chance.
With the result, Parkside improves to 4-1-1 in GLIAC play (13 points), tying Roosevelt for first, and closes the weekend with four of six points. It's the Rangers' first win over a ranked opponent since blanking these same Cardinals 3-0 last season in Kenosha.
Parkside hits the road to face Saginaw Valley State again on Friday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m.
