Mikkelson's Goal the Difference in Ranger's Season Opening Victory

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Parkside women's soccer team returned to Wood Road Field on Friday afternoon for the 2024 season opener. The Rangers played host to the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons. The Rangers secured the season opening victory in a 1-0 scoreline.

"It's always great to start the season with a win and a shutout. We created a lot of good opportunities in front of goal today and saw a number of new Rangers be a positive impact on the field. Hopefully we can capitalize more in the final third on Sunday but overall I'm really pleased with the effort and attitude the team put forth today," said head coach Brittany Nikolic following the Rangers victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Emily Mikkelson would score the Rangers first goal of 2024. The junior now has five game winning goals in her career.
  • The Rangers defense was stifling, holding MSUM to just two shots in the match with only one being on frame.

How it Happened
The Rangers would come out of the gates hungry. Parkside's defense would impress as they wouldn't allow a single Dragon shot in the opening 45 minutes of action. Dispite creating several opportunities the Rangers would fail to find the back of the net in the first half. The score at the break would sit at 0-0.

Parkside would come out firing in the second half of action. The Rangers would apply the pressure to the Dragons, putting up 19 total shots in the second half alone. They would end the day with 27 total shots, placing 12 on frame.

The breakthrough would come in the 68th minute. The Rangers high pressure on the backline would allow Emily Mikkelson to dispossess the Dragons defender. With the goalkeeper out of position, Mikkelson would easily find the back of the net to put the Rangers up 1-0. The Rangers would see the scoreline through until the final whistle to secure the season opening victory in front of their home fans.
