SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Parkside Softball program opened up their four-game weekend down in Springfield by sweeping the host University of Illinois – Springfield by scores of 12-4 and 8-6 on Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE
Shelly Deisz picked up her second win of the year inside the circle, working four and a third innings while allowing two earned runs on five hits. The Rangers clubbed four extra-base hits in the contest, including a home run by
Rylee Baetz.
Haley Remington led the offense with three hits, two runs scored and three runs driven in.
UIS struck first in the opening game, scoring one in the bottom of the first. The Rangers quickly answered in the top of the second, with Baetz ripping a homer to tie the game at one. Parkside wasn't done in the inning, scoring one on a
Taylor Delgado single. Rutledge followed with a sac fly to make it 3-1. Remington blew it open, driving home two on a single through the left side, making it 5-1 Rangers.
The Rangers weren't done offensively, adding on five more runs in the top of the fourth. With one out and two on Rutledge ripped a double in the gap, scoring two. Remington followed with a double of her own, making it 8-1 Rangers. Remington came in to score on a wild pitch, and Parkside scored one more run on the inning on an RBI groundout, making it 10-1.
UIS got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but Parkside was able to answer in the sixth. With one out and two on
Megan Medlin ripped a triple in the gap scoring two, extending the lead back to 12-3.
KC Shickel recorded the final five outs for the Rangers inside the circle, closing out the 12-4 win.
GAME TWO
Hope Maes picked up the win inside the circle, coming on in relief and working six and two-thirds innings, allowing just one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts. Four Rangers had multi-hit games, including Remington and Baetz recording two extra-base hits in the contest.
The Prairie Stars jumped out on the Rangers early, plating five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first.
Parkside started chipping away in the top of the second when Baetz and Johnson ripped back-to-back doubles scoring one.
After Maes sat UIS down in order in the second, the offense got to work in the third. Parkside had four straight hits to start the inning, with Remington ripping a two-RBI double down the left field line. Remington then came in to score on an RBI groundout by Medlin. Parkside got runners on the basepaths again, scoring the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by
Toni Rodriguez, making the score 6-5 Rangers.
The Rangers added on insurance runs in the top of the fourth. With one on Remington ripped an RBI double to make it 7-5 Rangers. She then came into score on an RBI single by Medlin, making it 8-5 Parkside.
UIS got one run back in the bottom of the fourth and Maes was able to work around two hits in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 8-6 win and the sweep for the Rangers.
