Smyrna, Tenn. — The Parkside softball team opened the 2024 season on Friday afternoon competing against Kentucky Wesleyan. The Rangers jumped out to a lead early, but ultimately fell 5-3 to the Panthers.

Mia Johnson went 3-3 with two doubles and a triple. She also scored a run.

Taylor Delgado went 1-3 with a two RBI triple in the second.

Shelly Diez threw three innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Parkside took the lead in the top of the second. Cassie Rutledge led off the inning with a single up the middle one out later a walk out two on for Delgado. She then drove the ball into the right center gap for a two RBI triple, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers got one back in the bottom of the second, then was able to push three across on two hits in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Kentucky Wesleyan added one more in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout.
Parkside pushed one final run across in the top of the seventh when Johnson was able to score on a wild pitch following a triple to right center.
Ellie Curtis took the loss, allowing four earned runs over three innings of work.
The Rangers second game of the day against Ashland was canceled due to rain and will not be made up. Parkside will return to action on Saturday afternoon at two and four. Links to coverage can be found at ParksideRangers.com/coverage.
