HOUGHTON, Mich-- The Parkside women's basketball team took on the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday afternoon in the upper peninsula. The Rangers played from behind for much of the afternoon and couldn't mount a comeback bid, falling to the Huskies 74-68.
"Disappointing weekend- I thought our team battled hard but when two good teams compete, it comes to all the little things. Close out short on a shooter, settling for a tough shot vs. a good one… At the end of the weekend, NMU and MTU made less mistakes than us. We didn't shoot that well this weekend- it's a great reminder to our squad that defense always travels," said coach
Jen Conely. She continued on saying, "We will need to turn the page quickly and get ready for another weekend of tough battles at De Simone next weekend."
Inside the Box Score
- Sheridan Flauger was lights out for the Rangers. The junior point guard went 9-19 from the field scoring a new career high 24 points. She also added three assists and snagged seven rebounds.
- Chloe Van Zeeland got her first start of the season and reached double figures in scoring with 11. She also added four rebounds to her statline.
- Parkside was able to out rebound Michigan Tech 34-31 on the afternoon.
How it Happened
The Huskies had a hot start in the first quarter scoring 22 points while shooting 50% from the field inlcuding a dominate display from deep, going 6-10 from beyond the three point line. In comparision to the Huskies offense, the Rangers had a bit of a slow start. The Rangers would shoot just as well as the Huskies from deep in the first quarter, but would only muster half the attempts the Huskies would, going 3-5 from three. A
Grace Lomen three pointer with 2:38 left in the 1st allowed the Rangers to build a small run to end the quarter. Parkside would outscore the Huskies 7-3 to round out the opening quarter of play.
The Rangers looked to turn it around in the second quarter. They would go one to shoot 50% from the field in the second frame while the Huskies would shoot under the 40% mark at 38.5% from the floor. The Ranger defense would also force the Huskies into 14 turnovers on the day and would cash in 14 points off turnovers on the afternoon. The Rangers would still trail at the conclusion of the first half, 35-30.
At the end of the halftime break the Rangers would struggle offensively. They would shoot 33.3% from the field, their worst quarter of shooting in the game. The Rangers would look to use a
Chloe Van Zeeland buzzer beating shot as a momentum boost heading into the fourth quarter.
Parkside would out score the Huskies 23-19 in the final quarter of play, but the Huskies had already done enough damage to pull away with the victory at home 74-68.
