Rangers Back in the Win Column After Victory Over Panthers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Parkside women's basketball team returned to action on Thursday night taking on GLIAC foe Davenport. The Rangers, in search of a victory after dropping just their fifth game of the season last Saturday to Northern Michigan, handled the Panthers on the road en route to a 66-48 win. Parkside now moves to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

"Tough road win against Davenport- I thought we showed a lot of growth on some of things that we've been working on. Offensively, we were disciplined and took great shots. They weren't dropping like they normally do and it was something that had affected us earlier this season. Instead, we were resilient, continued to play hard defensively, and just played solid until we were able to get going offensively. Defensively, we did a much better job executing our game plan and focusing on personnel. Nice to start the road trip 1-0, I know we will have a great battle on Saturday against GVSU," said head coach Jen Conely after capturing the team's sixth conference victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • It was a true team effort offensively for the Rangers. Nine different players were in the scoring column on the night, led by Chloe Van Zeeland with 11 points Sheridan Flauger with 10.
  • Parkside shot over 40% from the field for the 14th time this season, shooting 42.6% on the evening.
  • The Rangers were also able to shine on the defensive end of the floor as well, forcing the Panthers into 22 turnovers and converting them to 21 points.

How it Happened
The first quarter featured a back and forth battle between the two squads. The Rangers would hit more shots in the quarter, going 6-14 from the floor but wouldn't be able to generate foul shots like Davenport. The Panthers would get to the freethrow line three times in the first set of ten minutes and go a perfect 6-6. With that slight advantage, the Panthers would hold a slim lead after the first quarter, 15-14.

The Rangers hit their groove in the second quarter of play and outscore the Panthers 17-7 in the frame. It all started at the 4:35 mark, as a Paty Gallasova driving layup would mark the start off a 10-0 run. The Rangers would use that to build a 31-22 lead heading into halftime.

Parkside would grow their lead more in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers again 14-10. Both teams struggled to get their offense going out of the halftime break as Parkside would shoot 26.3% and Davenport 26.6%.

The fourth quarter would be all Parkside. The Panthers would hit a string of three three pointers to give themselves hope, but the Rangers were able to answer offensively and halt the Davenport comeback bid. The Rangers would use 21 fourth quarter points to grow their lead to 18, their largest of the game and go on win 66-48.

The Rangers will have a quick turn around as they head to Allendale, Mich. on Saturday for a showdown with Grand Valley State. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST. Coverage for the event can be accessed at ParksideRangers.com/coverage.
