KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Parkside women's basketball team returned to the hardwood of Haribo Court for a rival match-up with Northern Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers, being down as many as 25 tried to mount a comeback in the final quarter of play, but the comeback fell short as the Wildcats leave Kenosha with the 83-76 win.
"Tough loss today- I thought we played well for 3 quarters. The second quarter was brutal; I thought we became stagnant and our poor offense led to easy offense for them. Obviously disappointed with the outcome, but really proud of how our team battled back. Some growing pains- it's a part of the process, but we will definitely learn from it and be better," said head coach
Jen Conely after the loss.
Inside the Box Score
- Sheridan Flauger led the way for the Rangers offensively. The junior scored 18 points with 17 of them coming in the second half. She also shot 10-12 from the charity stripe.
- It was another hot night for Grace Lomen off the bench. The guard supplied the Rangers 11 points while shooting a perfect 5-5 from the field. She's now averaging 10.2 ppg in her last five games played.
- Lillie Petersen had another dominant performance on the glass for Parkside. The sophomore pulled down a team high seven rebounds.
How it Happened
The first set of ten minutes featured plenty of back and forth basketball up until the 3:09 mark of the quarter. A
Cassidy Arni jumper would kickstart a 11-5 run to give the Rangers a bit of breathing room heading into the second quarter as they built a lead with the score at 21-14.
The Rangers would struggle to get their offense going in the second quarter of play. The Wildcat defense would limit the Rangers to attempt just nine field goals as opposed to the Wildcats 17. Northern Michigan would outscore Parkside 28-6 in the second quarter and would head into the half leading 42-27.
The story was much the same for the Rangers in the third quarter. The Rangers would go on to shoot just 3-14 coming out of halftime. Parkside would find some bright spots to give themselves some momentum before heading into the final quarter of play, like a
Chloe Van Zeeland layup and a pair of
Sheridan Flauger free throws at the 5:01 and 4:04 mark.
In the fourth quarter the Wildcats would grow their lead to as much as 25 at the 7:56 mark, leading 66-41. From there the Rangers got to work as they began to chip away at the Northern Michigan lead.
Alli Hampel would come off the bench to give the Rangers some much needed energy and offensive production. The freshman scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter of play. Parkside trimmed Northern Michigan's lead down to as little as six as a
Sheridan Flauger three pointer with 2:02 left in the game brought Rangers closer, 73-67. The Wildcats would stave off the Ranger comeback, hitting their free throws and forcing the Rangers into tough shots down the stretch. The Rangers would go on to lose their first game at home since November 18th, 83-76.
The Rangers will look to bounce back next Thursday, January 25th as they travel to Davenport to take on the Panthers. Tip off from Grand Rapids is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. EST. Coverage for the game can be found at
