Rangers Earn a Draw in Home Opener

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Rangers played their home opening match against #17 ranked University of Illinois Springfield this afternoon. Both squads entered the match undefeated with 2-0 records. Both walked away still unbeaten after a 1-1 draw, as both teams now sit at 2-0-1 on the season.

Inside the Box Score

  • A goal was not conceded until the second half off of a UIS free kick by that was finished off in the 48th minute.

  • Parkside answered less than 5 minutes after on a Bryan Torres goal.

  • 6 players were booked in the match with yellow cards. 31 fouls were committed between the two sides.

  • Danyal Rana had a stellar outing in goal picking up 8 saves on the afternoon.

  • UIS more than doubled Parkside in shots on the day. The Prairie Stars rattled off 19 shots to the Rangers 6.

"In the end it was a good result even though you always want more. We were able to weather the storm in the first half. Despite going down first in the 2nd half I felt we came out with more energy than we started with. Great response on our goal. Hopefully we can continue to improve," head coach Jason Zitzke commented on the match.

The first half was a scoreless affair. The Rangers defense hung tough behind several key saves by Danyal Rana. 5 of his 8 saves came in the first half.

UIS finally bent Parkside's defense until it broke. A free kick given up outside of the 18-yard box allowed for Sergio Crescenzi to play a direct ball into the box for Riccardo Sandulli to flick on into the back of the net putting the Prairie Stars on top 1-0.

Despite giving up the goal, the Rangers recovered quickly and less than 5 minutes later found the equalizer. Julian Villalobos sent a ball across the mouth of the goal for Bryan Torres to finish off. The Rangers had drawn back even at 1-1.

Both teams searched for the game winner, but it came to no prevail as neither team could find the back of the net again before time expired.

The Rangers will be back in action on the road this Sunday in a Top-10 showdown with Maryville. It will be the first time the programs meet since facing each other in the 2022 Sweet Sixteen. Kickoff from St. Louis is set for noon CDT. Coverage for the match can be found at parksiderangers.com/coverage.
