Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rangers Come Up Short At Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan 73, Parkside 67
The Parkside women's basketball team traveled to Northern Michigan for a rematch against the Wildcats. Heading into the game, the Wildcats were the only team in the GLIAC not named Grand Valley State to hand the Rangers a loss in conference play, defeating the Rangers 47-35 back on Dec. 3, when they held Parkside senior Alyssa Nelson to just two points. The rangers battled hard the whole way, but a late surge lifted the Wildcats over the Rangers for the second time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Nelson wasted no time getting going in the opening quarter, scoring nine points in the opening five minutes. She would end the quarter with 12 points and three rebounds, shooting 5-7 from the field. The Rangers would end the quarter with a 18-15 lead.

The Wildcats got off to a hot start in the second quarter, taking a 24-20 lead after the opening three minutes of the quarter. At the media timeout, the Rangers trailed 27-25, as both defenses began to settle in during the middle of the quarter. Grace Lomen came out of the timeout with a bucket to tie the game at 27-27. A three for Nelson put the Rangers back on top. The Ranger went into the half with a 34-32 lead. Nelson continued to lead the Rangers with 17 points and five rebounds.

The Wildcats took a brief 41-39 lead in the third quarter, before Courtney Schoenbeck drained a deep three to take the lead back. A pair of baskets from Schoenbeck and Paty Gallasova kept the Rangers ahead 47-45 with three minutes to play in the quarter. The Wildcats found momentum to end the quarter and led 52-50 at the end of the third quarter. The Wildcats outscored the Rangers 20-16 in the quarter, with both teams shooting just under 40% from the field.

Gallasova made a steal to open the quarter and drew the foul. She would sink both free throws to tie the game at 52-52. The Cats would jump back out in front 54-52, before Sheridan Flauger would go to the free throw line and tie the game once again. A three from Gallasova would put the Rangers up 57-56. Four straight scores for the Wildcats would leave the Rangers trailing 63-57. This Wildcat surge would prove to be the deciding run, as the Wildcats held their distance, and would go on to earn the season sweep over the Rangers.

A LOOK AT THE STATS
Nelson led the Rangers with 23 points, and six rebounds. Gallasova finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Makaylee Kuhn led the Wildcats with 22 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
