Michigan Tech 68, Parkside 58
The Parkside women's basketball team traveled to Houghton, Mich. for a rematch against the Michigan Tech Huskies. A slow start for the Rangers would prove costly, as the Huskies would run away with a vengeful win on their home court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams got off to a slow start, with the Huskies drawing first blood just over two minutes into the game.
Alyssa Nelson scored first for the Rangers, going coast-to-coast and scoring on a layup. The Huskies jumped out to an early 6-2 lead halfway through the opening quarter. A score in the paint from
Kendal Zeiter brought the game back within two points. A layup for
Kayla Bohr tied the game at 6-6.
Paty Gallasova would hit a layup with 43 seconds left and the two teams would end the quarter tied 8-8.
The Huskies started the quarter with the first three-pointer of the game to jump ahead 11-8. Another three gave the Huskies a six-point lead. Bohr made her second bucket of the day so bring the deficit back to four. The Huskies hit their third straight three to open the game up to 17-10 with seven minutes to go in the half. Gallasova found
Maja Leidefors with a pretty pass to earn a layup. A layup for Nelson brought the game back within five points. The Huskies would hit yet another three, but a quick response from Gallasova would cancel it out at the other end. The Huskies earned an and-one scoring plau to increase their lead to 25-17. Another Husky layup would increase the lead to ten. The Rangers would go into the half down 27-17, after shooting just 26.7% from the field in the first half, along with an abysmal 8.3% from three-point land. The Huskies shot 42.3% from the field in the half, and an impressive 58.3% from behind the three-point arc in the second quarter. Gallasova led the Rangers with five points in the half.
Sheridan Flauger got the second half started with a steal that led to a made free throw for the Rangers. The Huskies kept the momentum in the third quarter, opening the quarter with a 9-2 run and extending their lead to 17 points. A much needed three from Nelson ended the Huskies run and brought the Rangers back within 14 points. An and-one play for the Huskies would put the lead right back to 17. Gallasova found Zeiter for an easy left-handed layup with five minutes to go in the quarter. A layup for Nelson would bring the deficit down to 13. Another layup for Zeiter brought it to 11, before a three from Tech' Alex Rondorf brought it right back to 14. Nelson answered with a three of her own. A free throw for Flauger and another layup from Zeiter brought the game back within ten, ending the third quarter with the Huskies up 44-34. Nelson led the Rangers with 13 after three quarters.
A three from
Lamija Coric got the Rangers back within single digits to open the fourth quarter. Another three from Nelson brought the Rangers within four and made the game interesting with eight minutes to play. The Huskies scored on a layup from Katelyn Meister, but Zeiter continued to shine, drawing a foul and sinking both free throws. Another Husky score brought the lead back to six, but Flauger answered right back with a layup of her own. Another score for Meister kept the Husky lead at six. Nelson hit another three and brought the game to 50-47. Lydia Schaible scored for the Huskies to increase the lead to five. A score from Ellie Mackay brought the lead to seven with her seventh basket of the game. Zeiter made her fifth basket of the game, but a pair of threes from Sara Dax and Isabella Lenz would bring the Husky lead back to 13. That would be enough to keep the Huskies undefeated on their home court this season.
HEAR FROM COACH CONELY
Disappointing loss at Tech today. Honestly, if you were to tell me that we were to have more points in the paint, score more on offensive rebounds, and cause 20 turnovers, I would have thought that we would have won. We just couldn't hit shots and dug ourselves too big of a hole to get out of. They shot well from three and it took us too long to get in rhythm. We had good looks, but just could not get them to fall for most of the game. I was really proud of how we continued to battle - I know the squad is pretty disappointed too, but we have another huge week next week at home against Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State."
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Nelson led the Rangers with 21 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Zeiter scored a career high 16 points, along with three rebounds and a block. Mackay led the Huskies with 17 points.
