KENOSHA, Wis. – Parkside cross country and track & field Head Coach
Nick Maas competed in the Mines of Spain 100 Ultra Run in Dubuque, Iowa on Friday and Saturday. Maas finished 11
th overall and second in the master's division with a time of 25 hours and 20 minutes (25:20).
The race started at 8 a.m. on Friday and went all day and into Saturday morning. Maas hit the 50 mile checkpoint at 6:04 p.m. and kept rolling into the night. He crossed the finish line at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday.
Maas did not accomplish this incredible challenge single-handedly, as he was joined in Iowa by a support team which included his wife Mandi and his daughter Katelyn, as well as Parkside alumni Anthony Anderson, Zach Keidrowaski, and Chloe Volkman. Parkside record-holder Brock Eves served as a pacer for his former coach for the final 40 miles of the race.
Maas' effort has not gone unnoticed by his current athletes, and serves as an inspiration for them as they are in the heart of their cross country season. "It's great having a coach that doesn't let himself get too removed from the sport," said Parkside senior
Emma Meyer. "Seeing Nick train and compete in ultras sets such as positive example of dedication, grit, and love of running for our team!"
"Huge respect goes out to my coach," said Parkside senior
Ramon Romero. "In addition to coaching more than 80+ athletes, he also has a normal life with a wife and a daughter. In spite of this, he is running a 100-mile race. He is showing the team courage and determination, and you can see that he is carrying the momentum we have built this cross season into his race."
Maas chose to compete in this race to give himself a new challenge. He has previously competed in four 50-mile races and one 24-hour race. Prior to the race, Maas commented, "I want to push my mind, body, and spirit to the limit and see what happens. I also want to show the team that if you truly believe and set your mind to a goal, you can accomplish anything."
Parkside cross country returns to action next Saturday as the Rangers travel to Detroit, Mich. for the Wayne State Warrior Challenge. For more information, visit
