Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#23 Rangers Best Saginaw Valley State in Overtime

#23 Parkside 1, Saginaw Valley State 0
The Rangers finished off their weekend road trip with a match against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals.  This matchup was highly anticipated as the Rangers are currently ranked 23rd in Division II and the Cardinals were selected to finish first in the GLIAC by the Preseason Coaches' Poll.  The match lived up to expectations, as the two teams needed an extra six minutes to decide a winner.  Both teams were held scoreless through the entire regulation, with the Cardinals and the Rangers both firing eight shots on goal.  The match then went into overtime.  In the 96th minute, senior Max Ludwig found reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week Rade Novakovich for the golden goal.

HEAR FROM COACH ZITZKE
"Four years ago, when we first joined the GLIAC, Saginaw Valley was the gold standard of the men's soccer league.  I think every year they have got a top team, and this year they were voted to finish first in the conference.  Nothing I saw in their team today makes me think any differently.  They had us pinned in the first half.  They had more energy, and were flying around the field.  They had a couple good chances that didn't go in.  I thought we improved a bit in the second half and made it to overtime.  We had a couple real good chances in overtime that we just couldn't finish.  And then Rade hit a screamer from the top of the box off a rebound to win it.  The key for us improving from the first to the second half was the guys coming off the bench, the unsung heroes.  Emilio Toscano, Osvaldo Sanchez, Cristian Gutierrez in the back, Mason Linehan, and Bryan Torres.  The guys that came into the match and matched the energy that Saginaw was bringing, and they helped get us back into the game.  These are guys that haven't played a lot of minutes early this season who played a huge role today and helped us find our footing."
