Grand Valley State 7, Parkside 6
The Parkside baseball team fell on Sunday to Grand Valley State, and split the weekend series 2-2. It was a wild game for each team, the Lakers committed five errors in the field, and the Rangers committed three of their own.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers got the start they wanted in the series finale, jumping out to a 4-0 lead thanks to three runs in the second inning and another in the third. Parkside's three in the second came from senior
Garrett LaBreche driving in two with an RBI-single, and then senior
Dominic Esposito driving in another with his own RBI-single. Their third inning run came after redshirt-senior
Nicholas Eisenmenger singled to left field, and then scored thanks to a pair of Grand Valley State errors on a ball that junior
Noah Tyrrell put in play.
Â
The Lakers got their offense going in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs, and taking the lead off of Parkside starter
Sean Sodaro, who had held them scoreless to that point. The Rangers knotted it up at five in the sixth thanks to a solo effort from LaBreche. He got on base with a walk, advanced to second on an error, stole third, and then scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately for Parkside, the Grand Valley State offense was able to add a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to take a 7-5 lead into the ninth. The ninth started on the right foot for Parkside, after Esposito doubled, advanced to third on a fly ball, and scored on a past ball. But that was as much as the Rangers wouldn't threaten, falling to a final score of 7-6.

STATWORTHY
LaBreche led the way for the Parkside offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, walk, and two RBI. Redshirt-senior
Casey Oliver (2-for-2) and Esposito (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games. Sophomore
Jared Heinzen was also on base twice, drawing walks in two of his three plate appearances.
