Parkside 2, Northern Michigan 1 (OT)
The Parkside men's soccer team won their second straight game in overtime on Saturday, with redshirt-freshman
Osvaldo Sanchez Arellano scoring just three minutes into the first overtime to take the game and wrap up the GLIAC No. 2 seed for the Rangers. Parkside will host a GLIAC Quarterfinal game on Sunday, April 25, but will await results tomorrow to see who they face.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Parkside drew first blood in the 16
th minute when redshirt-senior
Jorge Garcia found senior
Max Ludwig for his second goal of the year. Northern Michigan responded in the 33
rd minute with a goal from Emanuel Ancione to tie the game at 1.
Â
Coming out of halftime with the game tied 1-1 neither team was able to dominate the game, evidenced by the five shots that each team took in the second half. In the overtime, the first look at goal that either team got was to Sanchez Arellano, who buried it to give Parkside their fifth straight win.

HEAR FROM COACH ZITZKE
"We've had a lot of battles over the years, especially with Northern Michigan," said head coach
Jason Zitzke. "I think we're kind of similar teams, with similar styles, and we match up well against each other. It was back-and-forth the entire game. Max had a good strike to open it, but then they obviously tied it up pretty soon after. In the overtime period we had an opportunity that came to Osvaldo, who just hit a low, driven ball to the far post. It was a really good first touch on his part, and obviously a great strike. He had to step in to a starting role, but that's the way this season is going, with COVID and injuries."
Â
"We had a few guys go down in the last couple of weeks, and a lot of the guys had to step up into a new role," Zitzke continued. "Some guys that were maybe playing a little bit less in the beginning of the season are now stepping up and playing crucial minutes for us. It was good when we talked to the guys at the beginning of the season about just improving every day, as a team and as individuals. We kind of dug ourselves into a bit of a hole to start the season, but it was really good too see the guys respond and win five straight to end the year. Going forward, we'll continue to focus on improving every day, and then see how we do next week."
Â
STATWORTHY
The game-winning goal from Sanchez Arellano was the first goal of his career. Ludwig's goal is his second of the season, and seventh point, good for third on the team. Junior
Alexandre Durand got the start in goal for Parkside, and had four saves. The Rangers slightly outshot Northern Michigan 16-12, including six shots on goal, and five for the Wildcats.
Â
Parkside's five-game win streak is the program's longest since the 2006 season.

WHAT'S NEXT
