Rangers Fall in Home Opener Against Saginaw Valley State

Saginaw Valley State 4, Parkside 2
Sunday afternoon was the 2019 GLIAC Championship rematch at Art Keller Field for the Parkside men's soccer team and Saginaw Valley State Cardinals, but the result wasn't the same as it was in 2019. The Cardinals, behind four goals scored, got their revenge on the Rangers, and moved Parkside to 0-2 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a 24-yard free kick from Danny Barlow that cleared the wall and curled away from Parkside keeper Alexandre Durand. The Green & White responded almost immediately when a squared pass from senior Max Ludwig found redshirt-junior Dejan Rokvic at the six, and he slotted it home to tie the game at 1. Neither team had any clear-cut chances the rest of the half, but the Cardinals finished the period with 14 shots compared to the Rangers six.

Parkside came out aggressive to start the second half, and found the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute on a rebound that fell to Ludwig. Then, much like the Rangers did in the first half, Saginaw Valley State came back with a goal of their own just two minutes later in the 50th, and equalized on a Robbie Baker goal. However, the Cardinals weren't finished, as they added two more in the 55th and 73rd minute to close out the contest.

STATWORTHY
Saginaw Valley State controlled the possession in Sunday's contest, and it showed in the shots between the two teams. The Cardinals finished with 27 shots and 10 on goal, while the Rangers finished with 13 and five on goal. The games only cardwas a yellow, issued to the Cardinals Kairo Coore.

Ludwig finished the day with a goal and an assist, and Rokvic also slotted in his first of the year. Rokvic was active offensively, as he was responsible for five of the 13 Parkside shots. Saginaw Valley State's Danny Barlow had a brace, and they also saw goals from Baker and Alex Gloshen.

WHAT'S NEXT
Parkside will be back home next weekend to take on the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Sunday, March 21 at Noon. Following, the team will head to Northwood for a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Timberwolves on March 28 at 11:30 a.m.
