Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Downs Perennial Powerhouse Ashland

Parkside 80, Ashland 71
The Parkside Women's Basketball team got their first win in program history over the recent national powerhouse Ashland Eagles, after falling in their first nine contests. Ashland is coming off a GLIAC-winning, 32-0 season, and has won two of the last seven NCAA D-II Championships. All five Ranger starters finished in double-digits, and the team moves back to .500 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers were able to build an early lead in the first thanks to an 8-0 run that featured two made layups from senior Alexis Vaughn. However, the Eagles responded immediately, and went on their own 17-6 run that brought the game to 24 all with 7:20 left in the second quarter. With the momentum on their side, Ashland outpaced the Rangers to close the half, grabbing a 42-33 lead.

The Eagles looked like they might have been headed for their tenth straight win over Parkside after expanding their lead to 14 half-way through the third quarter, but the Rangers offense came alive at the right time. After the third quarter media timeout, Parkside went on to outscore Ashland 41-17 on 12-for-20 (60.0-percent) shooting from the floor.

STATWORTHY
All Ranger starters hit double-digits, but the team was led by junior Alyssa Nelson, who finished the game with 24 points, five assists, and five rebounds. That's now her second straight 20+ point performance, and fourth on the year. Junior Maddy Harrison also chipped in with a season-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Redshirt-junior Claire Jakaitis had 11, and Vaughn and junior Hannah Plockelman both had 10.

Although Parkside shot over fifty percent, (30-for-56) they made just one three pointer, their lowest total in a win since going 1-for-9 in a 69-67 victory against St. Joseph's on Feb. 16, 2016. On the other hand, the Rangers made a season-high 19 free-throws on 21 attempts.
