Nelson Notches First Career Double-double as Rangers Throttle LSSU

Parkside women's basketball dominated Lake Superior State Thursday night as the Rangers celebrated Academic Achievement, Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night and VIPS. The Rangers had their best defensive performance of the season, combined with their second highest scoring game. Sophomore Alyssa Nelson finished with her first career double-double, leading the team with 21 points, 10 rebounds and hit five 3-pointers. The Rangers improved to 14-12 on the year, and 11-7 in conference play. Parkside will host Ferris State on Saturday, Feb. 22 for senior day as both teams will battle for playoff seeding.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers started off strong with a 13-point lead by the end of the first quarter, thanks to the team hitting four 3-pointers. Parkside led by as many as 17 points in the first quarter, and held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. The Rangers slowly built on their lead in the second quarter, taking a 48-32 lead into the break.
 
The Green & White pulled away in the third quarter, using a 24-1 run that stretched into the fourth quarter to blow the game wide open. Parkside outscored the Lakers 42-22 in the second half.
 
A LOOK AT THE BOX SCORE
Nelson tallied her first career double-double, finishing with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Alisha Murphy tied a season-high with 17 points while senior Taylor Stephen had 14 points.
 
The Green and White finished 31-of-64 (48.4%) from the floor while the Lakers struggled and went 16-for-49. (32.7%). The Rangers were on fire from outside, finishing the game 14-of-35. Lake Superior had eight turnovers, while Parkside had nine.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
The Rangers will finish out their home weekend facing Ferris State on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. Carolina Rahkonen and Stephen will be honored on Saturday for senior day.
