Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls to Lewis; Suffers First Loss of the Season

LEWIS 1, PARKSIDE 0
Regulation was not enough to separate the two sides in Sunday afternoon's affair. The Rangers and Flyers went to overtime at Wood Road Field after being knotted up at zero for the full 90 minutes. The score stayed that way until a free kick from Lewis found the back of the net in the 107th minute and ended the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was a physical one, which is evidenced in the 16 yellow cards that were issued on the day. The teams went head-to-head with no real advantages until Lewis' Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu was issued a second yellow card and ejected from the game in the 57th minute. The Rangers had an 11-to-10 advantage for near 10 minutes when Lewis' Jayson Iniguez was also issued a second yellow, making the advantage 11-to-9 in favor of Parkside. Parkside put constant pressure on goal for the rest of the game but wasn't able to find a breakthrough. There was no decider until a Lewis free kick found the back of the net in the 107th minute.

HEAR FROM COACH ZITZKE
"Have to give credit to them, going down two men is tough, and they handled it well. Before that I thought it was a pretty good back-and-forth. We both had chances throughout the game and there were some pretty good saves by the keepers," head coach Jason Zitzke said. "When they went down two guys, they got really organized and it worked. If you are the team that is up players and on the attack, you have to move the ball quickly. I thought the ball was moving too slowly for us.

"In overtime their goalie made two really great saves on what looked like game-winners. At the end we just committed a silly foul and gave them a chance from a dangerous position and he hit the shot. They deserve to win on that shot, it was top corner and side netting," Zitzke added. "It's one that stings but moving forward we just have to let it go and really focus on the things we did well in the first game to get a good result."

STATWORTHY
Parkside finished the game with 19 shots, seven on goal, compared to Lewis' 12 shots and five on goal. Redshirt sophomore Rade Novakovich led the team with four shots with two of them being on goal. Senior Stevi Krecak was next with three shots, one being on goal. The Rangers also had 11 corner kicks on the day. Senior keeper Juan Gonzalez made four saves for the Rangers.

WHAT'S NEXT
Parkside will hit the road next weekend for their first road games. They will take on Illinois Springfield on Thursday, Sept. 12 at noon followed by Ohio Valley on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
