Parkside softball was forced to play a GLIAC doubleheader for the third straight day on the road on Friday due to weather in Michigan, and the Rangers saw a pair of one-run losses to Ferris State where each game came down to the final out. Ferris State won game one 7-6 after holding off a late Parkside rally and then took game two 6-5 on a walkoff.
GAME 1: Ferris State 7, Parkside 6
The game went back-and-forth, with the Rangers taking a 1-0 lead in the third and then tying it up 3-3 in the fifth inning. After a four-run fifth inning for FSU, Parkside trailed 7-3 heading into the top of the seventh where the team battled, scoring three runs and leaving the tying run on first base.
In the top of the fifth,
Adrien Hall and
Jessica Crull had back-to-back run scoring hits to tie it up at 3-3, but FSU scored four in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead. In the top of the seventh,
Kellie Fenza,
Cassie Walek and Hall had three straight singles to lead things off, with Hall's being an RBI single. Crull drove in Walek with an RBI groundout and
Morgan Sikon followed that with an RBI single to make it 7-6. The Bulldogs brought Kaitlyn Nugent out of the bullpen and she forced two straight groundouts to end the game.
Hall finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while Walek and Sikon each went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Fenza finished 1-for-2 with two runs and a stolen base.
Kate Czocshke suffered the loss, going 4.1 innings allowing nine hits, six runs and one strikeout.
Kiley Akey pitched the final 1.2 innings.
GAME 2: Ferris State 6, Parkside 5
The Rangers led for most of the game, but Ferris State ultimately used a walkoff two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to escape with the win.
The Rangers came back to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the third after a Walek two-run single and a Sikon RBI single that scored Walek. After the Bulldogs tied it up in the bottom of the fourth, Hall hit an RBI groundout to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead. FSU tied it up again, this time at 4-4, but Walek put Parkside back on top with an RBI single that scored
Allison Hausl to make it 5-4.
The bottom of the seventh started with back-to-back walks, followed by the game-winning two-run double.
Walek went 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, a stolen base and three RBI while
Lydia Byrd went 2-for-3 and seven other Rangers had a hit.
Alyssa Hrncar pitched the first 5.0 innings, while Hausl pitched the final 1.0 innings and suffered the loss.

Parkside will finish out the long road trip with two more games at Northwood on Sunday, March 31 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Rangers return home next Tuesday, April 2 with a doubleheader against Davenport at 2 p.m. at Case Softball Complex
