The Rangers battled former GLVC foe Maryville on Sunday, with the host Saints coming away with a sweep after taking game one 10-8 and game two 7-2. Parkside will face Trinity Christian next Friday before opening GLIAC play the following week.
GAME 1: Maryville 10, Parkside 8
The home Saints jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first inning, but Parkside came back to take a 8-6 lead in the third. The Saints got another big inning in the fifth to help pull away.
How it Happened
In the first inning,
Cassie Walek drew a run down and
Kellie Fenza came in to score to make it 1-0 Rangers. Maryville responded with six runs in the bottom of the first to take a 6-1 lead.
The Rangers bounced back, scoring six runs in the third inning on a
Morgan Sikon RBI single a
Morgan Moore bases loaded walk, a
Kate Czoschke RBI groundout and a clutch three-run double by
Allison Hausl to make it 7-6. Parkside then added another run in the top of fourth thanks to a
Megan Aliverti RBI double, that scored Walek. However, the Saints came back to score four runs in the fifth to take the 10-8 lead they wouldn't give up.
GAME 2: Maryville 7, Parkside 2
Game two featured a close game until the fifth inning, where the Saints used a four-run bottom of the fifth to pull away.
How it Happened
The Rangers took the early lead thanks to an error on Maryville, which allowed Hausl to score and make it 1-0 Parkside. Maryville answered, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Rangers made it a 3-2 game in the top of the fifth as Aliverti drove in Czoschke on a sacrifice fly, but the Saints scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull away.
Stat Leaders
In both games combined, Hausl went 4-for-7 with two doubles and three RBI while Aliverti finished with a double and three RBI.
In the first game, Parkside drew 10 walks as Walek had three and Fenza, Aliverti and Moore all had two. In game two, the Rangers were not issued a walk.
What's Next
Parkside will head to Palos Heights, Ill., next Friday, March 15 for a doubleheader against Trinity Christian College before GLIAC play opens up at Davenport the next week.
