Benich's Late Goal Gives Rangers 1-0 Win on Senior Day

PARKSIDE 1, NORTHERN MICHIGAN 0
A late goal by junior Delaney Benich helped the Parkside women's soccer team seal a 1-0 win over Northern Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Wood Road Field, which was Senior Day for Parkside. With the win, the Rangers beat NMU all three times they faced them this season, two of which came as nonconference matchups.

SENIOR DAY
Pregame, the Rangers honored their eight seniors, including Adrianna Bratel, Sophia Snyder, Viktoria Silva, Jazmin Castanon, Andrea Eliason, Maycee Kroening, Kaylee Siegel and Lara Ferrari.

HEAR FROM COACH NIKOLIC
"That was a must win and we got it," fifth year head coach Brittany Nikolic said. "I am thankful and full of appreciation for this senior class and happy they got a great result today. We created many good chances especially in the second half and Delaney stepped up and put one away when the pressure was on. Credit to the defense and Adrianna who took care of the other half of the field when we needed it."

MATCH RECAP
NMU had a good start offensively, getting nine shots off before Parkside registered their first shot, but the Rangers held up defensively throughout the attack. The Rangers had five shots in the first half, while the Wildcats had 10. In the second half, Parkside finished with seven shots while holding NMU to five.

It took until the 82nd minute when the Rangers were on the attack, the Wildcats' defender slipped and fell, leaving a 1-on-1 for Benich who beat the goalie with her right foot to the left side of the goal. It was Benich's team-leading fifth goal of the season, which ties her with freshman Alexis Baker for the most points on the team (10).

STATWORTHY
Bratel earned the win in goal for Parkside, finishing the game with five saves. Four players finished with four shots in Benich, Silva, Baker and Castanon. Kroening, Michelle Benitez, Emma Keaser and Makyla Severson all registered shots as well.

WHAT'S NEXT
Parkside will finish out the 2019 season at home on Friday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. against Purdue Northwest. It will be the Rangers' Epilepsy Awareness Game.
