Box Score BOX SCORE

Saginaw Valley State 2, Parkside 1

The Rangers fought hard but came up just short in the GLIAC Quarterfinal to No. 2 seed Saginaw Valley State. The loss closes out the 2019 campaign, with Parkside ending the season at 7-11-1 overall and a 2-7-1 conference record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It took until the 56th minute for either team to separate themselves, as the opening goal came on a solo-effort from the Cardinals Jennifer Muanamputu. Saginaw Valley State kept the momentum and later doubled their lead on a right-footed finish from Whitney Fleming. After finding themselves down 2-0, the Rangers didn't go down without a fight and responded in the 82nd minute with a goal from senior Jazmin Castanon. The goal came when Castanon had the ball fall to her feet on the edge of the box, and she fired a shot in the top right corner of the goal to bring Parkside within one. Trailing just one goal with eight minutes remaining, Parkside pushed for an equalizer, but eventually came up just short.

HEAR FROM COACH NIKOLIC
"I'm really proud of today's effort," said fifth year head coach Brittany Nikolic. "Despite coming into the game with some injuries and an unfortunate set of circumstances that led to the first goal, we fought hard and gave all we could. We will miss our seniors terribly but if we compete like we did today we can look forward to the future."

A LOOK AT THE BOX SCORE
Castanon's goal is her third of the year, and also puts her at nine points for the season. Also leading the way in the attack for the Rangers was senior midfielder Andrea Eliason, who had two shots with one on goal. The team also got a strong performance from senior goalkeeper Adrianna Bratel, who had 10 saves in the contest. The Cardinals pressured Parkside's goal all game, taking 26 shots with 12 on goal, to the Rangers nine shots with three on goal.
