No. 16 Lakers Take GLIAC Home Opener From Rangers

The Rangers took ahold of the lead as the first half expired, but the No. 16 ranked Grand Valley State Lakers went on a 13-2 run to open the second half and distance themselves from Parkside. Redshirt-senior Blair Arthur led the team with season-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
 
GLIAC HOME OPENER

This game was the first ever in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for Parkside women's basketball. UW-Parkside officially joined the GLIAC on July 1, 2018.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

Parkside had an early lead in the first quarter, going on a 7-0 run which ended on a pair of free throws for Grand Valley State. The second quarter was back-and-forth but the Rangers were able to create a 5-point lead going into halftime with a score of 26-21.

To start the second half, the Lakers went on a 13-2 run, creating the lead they would keep for the rest of the game. Scoring in the paint was key for GVSU in the second half, as 36 points were scored down low to Parkside's 16. For the Rangers, they were able to lead with points off turnovers with 14 points. In both the second and third quarters, the Lakers held the Rangers to 10 points each. Grand Valley State was able to go on two 5-0 runs in the fourth which amassed their lead to 17 points as the game clock expired.
 
STAT LEADERS

Arthur led the Rangers with season-high 18 points and seven rebounds followed by junior Carolina Rahkonen with 13 points and three rebounds. Redshirt-junior Taylor Stephen had four assists in the game along with three steals.

WHAT'S NEXT

Parkside returns to DeSimone Gymnasium this Saturday, Dec. 1 to compete against Davenport at 1 p.m. This game is Ranger Day at the Games.
